Evaluations

Evaluations are an essential part of the therapeutic process, as they help guide us to the root of the problem, leading to the most effective and appropriate form of treatment. Rachel’s evaluations are tailored to the needs of the individual child as well as the wishes and concerns of the parent.

What does an evaluation consist of?

A speech therapy or feeding therapy evaluation consists of a detailed parent interview followed by clinical observation and formal assessment of the child’s speech, language, and/or feeding skills. Rachel uses formal assessment measures that provide clinical data to measure the child’s current level of function as compared to other children of the same chronological age.

When will we get the results?

Rachel will provide evaluation results same day, as she understands the anxiety that long waits for results can provoke.

What will happen next?

Following evaluation, Rachel will recommend a plan of care, meaning the frequency (number of sessions per week) and expected duration of treatment (number of months treatment is expected to take). Rachel will take the needed time to speak with parents or caregivers about their priorities and concerns so that the plan of care can feel good for everyone.

Treatment

Rachel’s therapy sessions are play-based and 45 minutes in length. Each session is conducted within your home and includes direct one-to-one therapy followed by parent education. Like the evaluation, the treatment plan will be tailored to fit the individual needs of the child and the concerns and preferences of the parent(s) or caregiver(s.) All toys and supplies are provided by Rachel. Toys are fully sanitized between all sessions and disposed of if broken or soiled.

Speech Therapy Sessions

Rachel’s speech therapy sessions are conducted through play, as play is the primary and most effective way in which children learn. Whether targeting articulation, language skills, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), or social skills/pragmatics, Rachel will have the children playing, smiling, and expanding their speech and language skills in a way that is age-appropriate and fun for all involved.

Feeding Therapy Sessions

Rachel targets feeding therapy through a slow and playful approach to allow for the best learning in a pressure-free environment. Rachel helps kids better achieve the pleasure of feeding by reducing food-related anxiety and aversion. Feeding techniques include the SOS approach to feeding and oral motor therapy.

What does the parent education entail?

Rachel will provide thorough parent education following each session. Homework and/or home program suggestions will be provided to help support continued learning and progress in between sessions.
